Text Henrik Ibsen - Incidental music Edward Grieg, 1876
"Who are you ?... I am myself... Can you say such a thing about yourself ?" - Henrik Ibsen, Peer Gynt - Act 5
ABOUT
Combining full orchestra, chorus, singers, actors and live video, this multi-disciplinary production sets Ibsen’ iconic dramatic poem in a world deliberately abstract and very real. The musicians are seated inside an elegant structure of pinewood. They are surrounded by a labyrinthic combination of lanes, on which actors and singers stand throughout the performance. The performers deliberately do not embody their characters. They rather create stylized evocations of them, by using props, puppets and any sort of small objets at their disposal in the scenery. All these sequences of micro-theatre are filmed live and broadcasted on a large Norvegian wooden house erected at the back of the stage. The atmosphere is theatrical, deliberately funny but also profoundly poetic and meditative, presenting Peer Gynt in the most unexpected way.
